Our Vineyards

Our vineyards express the variety and complexity of the characteristics of our territory.

The estate of Fattoria il Casalone covers about 300 hectares, 20 of which are devoted to high-quality wine production. From the start, our project focused on careful research to identify the best grape varieties for our land.

In the early 1960s, we had 12 hectares of vineyards and were among the first in the area to experiment not only with traditional clones such as Sangiovese, Trebbiano, and Ansonica, but also with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Vermentino, achieving a perfect match with our coastal terroir.

After extensive research, in 2000 we replanted the vineyards, removing Trebbiano and Ansonica, which did not meet our high standards, and introduced Viognier, one of the first in Maremma.

Sixty years into our continuous research on clone quality, with particular attention to native varieties like Vermentino, we are proud of the consistent excellence our vineyards deliver each harvest.

Today, of the 20 hectares, 8 are dedicated to Vermentino, while the remaining 12 hectares grow Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Viognier.

Vines are planted at 2.20 x 0.80 meters with a high density of 5,680 vines per hectare.

The selective yield is approximately 70 quintals of grapes per hectare.

We use a spurred half-cordon system with 4 fruiting buds per plant. The reduced number of buds, high planting density, and low fertilization ensure optimal balance between leaves and fruit, enhancing concentration, aroma, polyphenols, and sugar content.
